Where are the Copper Canyons?

The Copper Canyons (Barrancas del Cobre) are located in northern Mexico in the State of Chihuahua. The Canyons are a series of massive canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. Popular for hiking and running, they get their name from the copper-green hue of the canyon walls.

Is it safe to run there?

It is as safe as any other area for remote trail running. The state of Chihuahua and the local Municipality of Urique will be fully aware of our agenda for our events and will there will be local law enforcement and emergency personnel present during all our events. 

What Paperwork will I require?

We do not require any medical certification, however, we expect you to be in good health and prepared for a challenging physical adventure. For international travelers, in addition to your passport you will require a visa or tourist permit to enter Chihuahua (depending on your passport country – US only requires a tourist permit). 

What else should I bring?

While the weather is ideal this time of year, this is a mountain and canyon event and you will experience very warm days and perhaps very cold evenings and your gear and clothing should address this. Also, please get your Pesos in advance, as there are not really available places to exchange once in the Barrancas.

Why is the pricing all-inclusive?

Given how limited the lodging options are, it was easier for us to simply book all the rooms at the hotels in the area rather than let participants fend for themselves. We also feel that this model allows for a better cultural experience since we take all the guess work (and potential language barrier) out of the equation.

What’s included in the “all-inclusive” pricing?

The pricing includes the following:

·      All round-trip ground transportation from El Paso Texas to the Copper Canyons

·      All race entry fees

·      All nights lodging

·      Breakfast and Dinner for each day of the trip

·      Admission to cultural events and day excursions such as zip lining or tram rides

·      Custom event gift and finisher awards

Do I have to take the all-inclusive option? 

No. You are welcome make your own way to the Copper Canyons and find your own lodging or camping accommodations. Note that the event hotels and lodges will be fully booked for all-inclusive package participants.

Can you accommodate Special diets?

If you have special nutritional needs or allergies please be prepared to be responsible for your own meals.  For the most part, all organized meals will have vegetarian options, and limited vegan diet options.  We will also attempt to accommodate those who prefer gluten-free nutrition.  However, we cannot guarantee any special dietary needs can be met, and you should plan accordingly.

How difficult are the races?

All the courses (the multi-day Canyon to Canyon stage race, 100 mile endurance run, marathon, and half marathon) are challenging. We expect participants to be fully prepared for these events and not sign up just hoping for the best.

What level of fitness is required?

The 100 mile event is likely one of the most challenging races in North America. The multi-day stage event will cover much the same course as the 100 mile, however as it allows the run to be broken into four days segments, it is more approachable for many athletes. However, while there are long stretches of easier terrain, there are many miles and long segments of challenging technical climbs and descents.

Is the course disabled athlete friendly?

The various courses cover all types of terrain within the Sierra Madre and should not be considered by anyone with injury or with a physical challenge.

Are there time cutoffs?

For the stage runs, at approximately the closest aid station to half the days miles there will be a cutoff. The time will vary and be based on the expectation that it would not be possible for the runner to complete the course before nightfall. The 100 Mile event will have a hard cutoff in Urique on the return at 10:30 AM.

Are there pacers or crew allowed?

There is no pacing or crewing for the Stage event. The 100 mile will allow crew at designated locations and Pacers can be picked up once arriving in Urique. The Marathon and half have no pacing or crew.

How frequent are the aid stations?

The aid stations will be approximately 6-9 miles apart for most of the course.

What will be available at the aid stations?

All aid stations will offer traditional filtered water, traditional Pinole, bean rollups, tortillas and various fruit.  Some may offer additional nutrition, but be prepared to bring your own if you have a preference for certain gels, bites or the like.

What is the course marking like?

The course will be thoroughly marked with ribbon and additional notifications at obvious junctions. For the stage race there will be local Tarahumara runners in each segment (and sweeping the course) that are very familiar with the trails and the lands.  

Can I wear headphones?

We ask that you don’t but if you must, we ask that you keep the volume down at a safe level so that you can hear other runners or instructions from event personnel. We also ask that you remove them, or, at the very least, remove one ear bud when you are coming to aid stations, in a large crowd or on more technical or difficult sections of the course. The important thing is paying attention to everyone's safety and maintaining basic race etiquette with other runners.

Can I drop during my event?

Much of the course covers challenging and remote locations. Always, if you are able you should get to the nearest aid station. We will have on course access to evacuate for any serious injury. If you drop please notify a race representative as soon as possible.

What is the medical support and insurance situation?

The race will be supported by local Red Cross and there will be emergency medical response teams on call. The race does not provide any insurance of any kind. If you desire any type of travel or health related supplemental insurance you are personally responsible to acquire it. As we get closer to the event, we will share a couple of options for this as we can.

Can I bring my camera?

We will have on course a team taking pictures and filming parts of the run. However, this is one of the most majestic races on the planet – you should for sure bring some type of small camera/video device.

Is there Mandatory equipment That I need to Run with?

We will provide a list of suggested items to carry during your runs. However, the race does not have a required kit. We will you are an experienced athlete and understand what you will need relative to whatever conditions the day will bring.

Will the events be cancelled if it rains?

No. The race will be held, rain or shine. Courses may be modified to account for weather conditions.

Do you offer refunds?

No. Putting on a race can be a very expensive (and financially risky) endeavor. To a small extent, that risk gets shared by all who enter since injuries, emergencies and plain old "life happening" can potentially ruin plans for participation.

Prior to September 1st we will refund 60% of your paid fees or carry over your entry to 2020 with a $150 processing fee.  You are also able to transfer your entry for a $100 transfer fee.  After September 1st due to the nature of this event there are no refunds or transfers.
